The Battles
There were many battles during the civil war. The battle that began the war was the Attack on Fort Sumter, April 12, 1861. This was when the Confederate army attacked the fort for 34 hours, and made the Union commander surrender. (p.502) The fort was located in Charleston, South Carolina (p.501).
The Battle of Bull Run happened on July 21, 1861 at Bull Run, which is a river. Everyone thought the Union Army would win, but the Confederate Army won, making the Union troops flee in fear. (p. 516).
A famous battle between two warships was called the Battle of Two Ironclads (p.518-519). The two ironclad warships fought until a draw, no winner, in March 1862. The ironclad ships were new weapons made for the Civil War.
A Battle at Richmond was almost won by the Union Army, but they waited too long, and the Confederate Army was able to protect Richmond on May 31, 1862 (p. 519).
One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War was at Antietam Creek, Maryland on September 17, 1862 (p. 520). This battle happened after one of General Lee’s men had lost a paper with the plans for the Southern Army, and the Northern General McClellan used the paper to attack Lee and his men. Both sides lost many men, and no one felt like they had won in this battle.
The Battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862, was important because the North forced the South out of an important railroad station. (p. 521). The Union General Grant forced the South General Albert Sidney Johnston to flee with his men. Both sides lost many men during the battle.
At the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, the Union lost 13,000 men, and the Confederates lost about 5,000 men (p. 533). This battle happened in December 1862.
The Battle of Chancellorsville happened in May 1863, between Union General Hooker and Confederate General Lee. The South won this battle, but they also lost one of their Generals. At this battle Stonewall Jackson was shot, and later died. (p.533).
The Battle of Gettyburg happened in June 1863 between Confederate General Lee, who wanted to win a victory on Union ground, and General George Meade. The Union Army was on a hill called Cemetery Ridge, and the Confederate Army was on a hill called Seminary Ridge. The North won the battle, but both sides lost many men. (p. 534-535).
The Fall of Vicksburg happened on July 4, 1863, when General Lee’s Army was retreating from Gettysburg, and the Union General Grant began a siege against the Fort at Vicksburg and he didn’t stop until the Confederate troops surrendered. (p. 535).
The City of Atlanta fell to Union control on September 2, 1864 when Union General Sherman attacked the city and ordered it burned. (p.536).
The Surrender at Appomattox happened on April 9, 1865, when General Lee of the Confederate Army surrendered to General Grant of the Union Army in Richmond Virginia. (p. 537).
